Historic Harmony Family Mini Photo Session

This sweet family has been in front of my lens a few times over the years, starting all the way back in 2018 for their wedding day! It is a joy and a privilege to get to photograph families throughout the years

These photos were taken in Historic Harmony - one of my favorite local Christmas backdrops! Caroline was a little trooper and so much fun to photograph.

Thank you, Kelly & Daniel, for letting me photograph your sweet family!

Meet this beautiful family of 8!

You may remember this family from their photo session last year... and what is so remarkable to me is that this family has been getting yearly family photos taken for 14 years now! Mom says it's her favorite day of the year, and I would think it just keeps getting more meaningful as her kids keep growing older.

I am truly amazed at the determination of mom (Elizabeth) - this was my first year getting my own family photos scheduled, outfits coordinated, making sure we were on time, etc. - and just with three people it was tough enough! Our own family photo experience has given me a whole new respect for families who set aside the time yearly (or bi-yearly, or really, EVER!) for family photos.

A big thanks to this family for inviting me to their home again for mom's favorite day of the year!

PS - if you aren't sure where to have your photos taken, your home/property is always a great choice! It's meaningful - and it's easier than packing everyone up in the car to drive to a separate location!

We had a blast photographing this family in downtown Pittsburgh on a bright & beautiful March afternoon! The family’s eldest sibling, JR, was scheduled to get his senior photos taken, so the family opted to add on a “family mini session” prior to the start of JR’s senior session!

I would venture to say that senior photos are also the perfect time to update family photos, and a family mini session means that it will be quick and painless for everyone involved ;) One member of the family is already going to be photo ready, and typically one parent (and possibly a sibling) will be coming to the photo session for moral support anyways... so why not just get some photos of everyone together before your senior heads off to college or trade school?

A huge thanks to this sweet family for the honor of capturing this season for them! ❤️ We had a blast with you guys!!!

I cannot believe that I have never shared these images here on my blog! They are truly some of my favorites I’ve had the privilege to create in the last couple of years.

A few summers ago, I received a message through my website for a mom-blogger looking for someone to take some lifestyle, in-home photos for brand, Cake for Breakfast. Intrigued by the name (cake lover here! 👋) and in alignment with her vision style and content-wise, I gratefully accepted the opportunity to take photos of Christi Lukasiak’s family and happenings in her home!

I knew after our first shoot when she sent me home with a full, floral-covered cake (with the good buttercream icing, might I add!) that we would be just fine working together 😉 I had the privilege of hanging out with this family on a few different occasions , and they truly are a blast to work with! I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite photos from our time together, AND to possibly give some inspiration into what an in home “lifestyle” family session could look like.

These four were TROOPERS in the cold December weather, which is no small feat with two little ones in tow! We had cold, wind, and at the very end of our session - snow! But with so much stacked against us (including a quickly setting sun!) we got SO much done during our time together!

I am so thankful for the opportunity to photograph this sweet family of four! ❤️ Enjoy a few of my favorite photos from their session below!

Todd Family: Historic Harmony Family Photos

I had the BEST time hanging out with this incredible family in Historic Harmony! Also, general PSA - feeding your children milkshakes before a photo shoot is definitely encouraged! 😉 But seriously - these kiddos had so much energy, which made our time together so much more fun!

When I first started photographing families, I used to struggle with photographing kids who had lots of energy… until I figured out how to use that energy to my advantage! One of my favorite things about photographing kids now is that they’re naturally moving allllll over the place. They want to move, laugh, talk, and giggle, so I love to lean into that with using some fun games and questions to get them laughing and having a good time. The less they feel forced to smile, the more fun they can have, and the more their natural smiles will come out! (But for any moms out there who might be reading this - don’t worry! I always make sure to get a few of everyone looking directly at the camera!)

Thank you for the incredible honor of taking these photos for you, Todd family! You all are such a blessing!

How to Prepare for Your Winter Photo Session

How to Prepare for Your Winter Photo Session

There are SO many things I love about photographing people in a winter setting. There are lots of unique and picturesque backgrounds, and the photos always end up having an overall “cozy” feeling to them! But what does it really take to have your photos taken in the dead of winter when it’s 20 degrees (or less!) outside? There are a couple of tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years that have helped make winter sessions more enjoyable for those who are brave enough to step in front of my camera. So if YOU are planning on having family photos, couple photos, or senior photos taken during the winter – these are my best tips for you!

2017-12-18_0001.jpg

Make sure the first thing you’re thinking of when planning your outfits is WARMTH!

  • Add accessories like scarves, hats, jackets, long boot socks and boots.
  • Consider actually wearing a coat for your photos!
  • Add layers underneath your chosen outfits – socks, long johns, an extra t-shirt – anything that will insulate you a little bit more!
  • If you’ll be walking around in the snow, consider bringing a pair of snow boots for walking between locations so your “nice” boots or shoes don’t get ruined!

Bring some EXTRA warmth with you for in between shots!

  • I always bring a blanket or two with me to my sessions in the winter, but I highly recommend bringing extra for yourself if you think of it! This can be a lifesaver while walking between locations or even just between shots!
  • Hand warmers are a LIFESAVER for cold winter shoots. You can put them in your gloves, shoes, and pockets without the camera picking it up (for the most part!)

Be willing to be flexible if the weather calls for it.

There’s a higher chance of inclement weather, especially in Western Pennsylvania in the winter months, which means that a session could easily get snowed out or cancelled due to extreme temperatures. It’s not fun to have your photo taken in negative degree weather, which can make the session (and memories associated with it) somewhat unenjoyable, which is the very LAST thing I would ever want!

As a firm believer that photo sessions can be (and should be) enjoyable, incorporating these tips and tricks into your winter photo session will ensure that you stay somewhat warm and toasty throughout your entire session!
