Greensburg Horse Barn

A few days ago, I visited a friend from school in Greensburg, PA, who happens to own a horse. It was the perfect photo opportunity (and the perfect time to try out my new lens!).

I always love photographing people with their most prized posessions, and this day was no different. Megan has been riding Freedom (her horse) for years, and there was an obvious bond between them.

Photographing People with a Purpose

I love photographing people. With it comes countless stories and connections. Sometimes, when I strike up a conversation with a stranger in Starbucks or at the Y, I find myself thinking "I would love to shoot a portrait of this person!" As odd as that might seem, I feel like it's part of what aids me in my love of photographing people. Everyone has a story, and everyone deserves to tell said story. And while lots of people love novels with page upon page of neverending text (don't get me wrong - I love them too!), I enjoy a book with a few photos thrown into the mix. It helps give whatever you're reading about a face (so to speak), and sometimes speaks more to what the author is trying to convey than an endless arrangement of carefully written text. As they say - a picture is worth a thousand words. So without further ado, meet a wonderful lady named Dot (who just so happens to be my boyfriend's grandma). Dot loves peanut butter cups and a good old cup of coffee. And for all the food she eats (once I saw her eat 6 cupcakes in one sitting), she somehow manages to stay petite! Here's a little bit of her story: A wedding photo. 2013-08-08_0009.jpg An old yearbook. 2013-08-08_0010.jpg 2013-08-08_0012.jpg 2013-08-08_0011.jpg A little glare on the glasses, but her look - priceless. 2013-08-08_0013.jpg

Delaware & New York City

These past few months of summer have provided me with more travel opportunities than ever before in my short life! From Ireland to the Outer Banks to a family reunion in Deleware with a day trip to New York City – I have been more than blessed. And thank God I have had a camera at my side the entire time! Something I truly love about bringing my camera along on my adventures is capturing a place I’ve never been before from a unique perspective – my own. Sure, it’s one thing to look at photos of a place and dream of going there, but it’s another to actually go and photograph it for yourself. Somehow, it makes that place and the people you experienced it with a little closer to your heart.

So for that reason - here's to many more adventures.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain

Adventure is Necessary | Ireland

“Adventure is a need.” – Toba Beta A week ago today I returned from one of the greatest adventures of my life – a two-week trip through the beautiful country of Ireland.

And I hardly know where to begin.

Let me first start off by saying that I have never been a person who liked change. I have been known to be the type of person who craves a life of routine and stability, opposed to a life of uncertainty and adventure. (Lame, I know). Though I had been abroad once before (to Kenya), this was the first time I would be traveling outside of the country with a group of people I barely knew. And, to be honest – I was a little nervous. But after only a few days into the trip I knew that I had no reason to be. To be honest (again), I couldn’t have asked for a more awesome group of people to experience Ireland with. I love hanging out with people who have the same passion for photography as I do, and who inspire me to keep on shooting day after day. This trip has shown me that change is, in fact, not just good, but necessary. Change (and adventure, for that matter) gives life a bit of a new perspective, and helps us see things in a different light, or through a different lens, if you will. As Miriam Beard once said, “Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”

A few of my favorite moments:

Sewickley Styled Bridal Shoot | Spring 2013

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to tag along with a great photographer friend of mine, Gabrielle Halle for a styled bridal shoot at International Images, Ltd. in Sewickley, PA. Gabrielle has been gracious enough to allow me to share a few of the photos I took during the session - be sure to check out her site and show her some love! She is an awesome lady with incredible talent! Special thanks to all of the vendors who donated the items used for the shoot, including Karrie Hlista (floral decor and design), Spoiled Chicks (various accessories), Ragged Row (stunning dress!), Antiquarian (chairs and furniture), and Jewel Thief (gorgeous ring). A big thanks to our model, Pheobe, and makeup artist, Crystal Halle as well!

Then and Now

"The only person you should compare yourself to is the person you used to be." Or, in my case - "the only photographer you should compare yourself to is the photographer you used to be."

These two photos represent

Sometimes, it's easy to lose sight of how far you've come.

Courage is What Counts

Welcome to my little corner of the vast world wide web! This blog is dedicated to the small things that make life beautiful – hot tea on a cold day, short quotes with a big impact, and capturing the details of life through photography. Starting a blog has been a goal of mine for a while now, spurred by my love for writing. Ever since I can remember I have kept a journal detailing the changes, thoughts, and moments of life that I hope to remember, and more importantly, learn from. After all, life is a cycle of failure, change, improvement, and achievement (with achievement sometimes taking the longest to come). As Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Courage is what gives us the strength to rise above our failure and beyond our success to continue the work that we have been called to do – to push towards our purpose in life. And sometimes, that purpose is found in the small and somewhat unseen things – in loving the unlovable, in believing in those who have ceased to believe in themselves, in living life with integrity and purpose. I would contend that true purpose in life is found in the details of who we are and in who we believe we can be – and in having the courage to be, as a friend once said, “the most saturated versions of ourselves,” without fear of rejection or failure. That takes true courage… and that, as Churchill believed, is what counts.
