20 Small Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding Day

Weddings can be expensive, but they don’t have to be! Believe it or not, there are small ways you can cut costs while planning without sacrificing style or aesthetic on your wedding day.

As a wedding photographer of 10 years, I’ve seen many couples choose budget-friendly options without sacrificing the parts of the wedding day that are most important to them.

Believe it or not… I photograph a lot of budget-friendly wedding days. When I was first getting started in wedding photography, I heard a big name photographer in the wedding industry mention that a good photographer can make a budget-friendly wedding look like a savvy soiree… and really, it’s true! If you invest your budget in the right places and in the right vendors, you can still have a beautiful wedding day without spending more than you want to!

So, without further ado, today I’m sharing some of the top ways I’ve seen my couples save $$$ while planning their wedding days!

1.     Skip the matching PJ’s and robes.

These are definitely cute, but the cost for these can add up quickly!

2.     Skip the boutonnieres.

Or, have your husband-to-be be the only one to wear one. Boutonnieres are nice, but not necessary, especially for groomsmen.

3.     Go BIG for your bridal bouquet, but choose smaller bridesmaid bouquets.

Bridesmaid bouquets don’t have to be huge to add to your bridal party photos visually! Focus more on the bridal bouquet, which will be in more photos.

4.     Instead of programs for the ceremony, use a big sign at the ceremony entrance.

One less thing to have to print! You can even thrift a mirror or piece of glass and write the program on there yourself. Most people throw these out anyways!

5.     Instead of escort cards at the reception, use a large sign at the reception entrance to direct guests to their seats.

Escort cards are another small item that just get thrown away. Consider a large sign instead.

6.     Choose a venue that only allows a certain number of guests (that way, you have to stick to it!)

If you choose a venue that only allows a certain number of guests, you have to stick to that number. Which means less meals to pay for than a venue that allows basically an unlimited number of guests!

7.     Consider doing ALL of your wedding day festivities (getting ready, ceremony, photos, reception) at the same location.

This will MAJORLY cut transportation costs. Bonus points if guests from out of town can walk to your venue from their hotel, or if the hotel provides free transportation for guests to the venue! Also, investing in a limo/party bus for the bridal party to ride from place to place in can be a big expense.

8.     Consider getting married in the “off season.”

If you’re in a state that has super cold winters or super hot summers, consider getting married during that timeframe where people don’t really want to leave their houses. You might be able to get some discounts from your vendors for having an off-season wedding.

9.     Consider getting married on a week day.

You know what’s great for a wedding vendor? Getting to work during a week day! We work a lot of weekends, so when someone comes along and wants to get married on a random Tuesday, we are ALL FOR IT! For us, that means one more Saturday that we get to spend with our friends & family!

10.  Have your guests RSVP via a wedding website.

Guests RSVP-ing online means = one less envelope, card, and stamp to include in your invitation suite!

11.  Don’t wait until last minute for dress alterations.

Alterations can be expensive as is, but when you’re trying to get them done last minute? They can be even more expensive! Try to plan out your alterations in advance with enough time so your seamstress doesn’t have to charge a rush fee.

12.  Ask your florist what flowers are in season during your wedding, and go with those.

Did you know that it costs more money to get flowers that are out of season than those that are in season? Tell your florist your vision if you have one, and then try to make that vision happen with flowers that are in season.

13.  Borrow jewelry, hair pieces, shoes, and even your veil from a friend or family member.

Not only will this save you money, but it will make everything you’re wearing on your wedding day a bit more sentimental!

14.  Consider going for a smaller cake, and having friends & family contribute cookies and other small desserts for a big dessert spread for guests!

If you happen to be from Pittsburgh, you know that we go BIG with cookie tables - so getting a small cake for you and your spouse to cut, then serving cookies and cupcakes to guests, can be a great way to go!

15.  Skip the favors. Or, make it something simple (like taking home cookies from the cookie table!)

Favors can be hit or miss - if they’re not something people will actually use, they’ll usually just get left behind or thrown out anyways. Unless you live in Pittsburgh and make your favors boxes of cookies from your cookie table ;)

16. Choose your top three most important vendors to spend on, and go cheaper on the rest.

If you’re on a budget, you can’t spend big on everything - but you can certainly choose parts of the wedding day that are most important to you and spend on those! For me when I got married, we went bigger on the venue, photographer (surprise surprise! ;) ), and food. With everything else, we did the best we could, and did what we could!

17. When choosing packages from wedding vendors, start with a lower package, then upgrade later if necessary.

This is advice I actually give to my own couples that book with me! Sometimes, my couples aren’t sure if they need 8 hours or 10 hours of coverage, if they want an engagement session or not, or if they want an album or not. So I always tell them - go for the cheaper one, and upgrade later if you decide you need more coverage, want an engagement session, or want an album! That way, you’re spending less to begin with and can add on as-needed.

18. Have a lower-key rehearsal dinner.

This is another one that we used for our wedding day - we catered Chipotle for our rehearsal dinner and ate it at our church instead of eating out at a fancy restaurant or venue! The food was actually a huge hit with all of our families and bridal party!

19. Limit alcohol.

This one may not be for everyone… but it certainly does work! Limit the types of alcohol you serve on your wedding day to save a little bit of extra money.

20. Nix “wedding welcome” packages for guests.

I know, I know… but these are so fun and sweet! Wedding welcome packages often include small gifts and souvenirs from the town/city/area where the wedding is taking place.

These are always so cute, but are they completely necessary? Maybe for you, they’re a must have! But if you’re willing to part wit them, consider trying to go a more cost effective route. Consider writing your guests hand-written notes instead, paired with a small guide for things to do and places to see while they’re in town!

Is there anything else you would add to this list? Feel free to let me know in the comment section below!

Alex & Nick: Camelot Banquet Center Warrendale Wedding Photos

It was a lovely, beautiful, fairytale wedding day with Alex & Nick just a few weeks ago at the Camelot Banquet Center in Warrendale!

The Camelot Banquet Hall in Warrendale is one of my favorite small wedding venues near Cranberry Township. It has some beautifully unique features, including beautiful stain glass windows surrounding the entire reception space! I photographed one wedding here quite a few years ago, so it was fun to be back in a familiar space (that also is quite close to home!).

We've had the pleasure of knowing the bride's family for quite some time - I even took Alex's senior photos back in 2014, near the start of my photography journey! So of course, we were beyond honored to be asked to be a part of this sweet celebration!

Alex & Nick's wedding day was everything you would want an early March wedding in Pittsburgh to be. They had an unseasonably warm and sunny day, which was a huge blessing, since we took the majority of their portraits outside! Though not many trees had begun to bloom as of early March, we were still able to find some beautiful photo locations right on the Camelot’s property for photos - some out front of the Camelot, and some on an unsuspecting bridge right near the venue!

One of the sweetest parts of their day - which was a complete surprise to Alex & Nick - was the white horse drawn carriage waiting for them outside following the exit from their ceremony! An unforgettable surprise coordinated by the father of the groom.

Without further ado - I’m so excited to share Alex & Nick’s wedding photos with you!

Congratulations, Alex & Nick, on your beautiful wedding day, and on your marriage!

Megan & Frankie: Circuit Center Ballroom Wedding Photos

The morning of Megan & Frankie’s wedding, I woke up and immediately checked the temperature, knowing that it was going to be a cold one… and was met with a reading of -8°F, with a high for the day of 15°F.

I’ve only ever photographed two weddings prior to Megan & Frankie’s in January here in Pittsburgh. One had a high of 6°F for the day, and the other had a high of 56°F! It goes to show that you never truly know what weather will be like here in the Burgh for any Pittsburgh winter wedding.

Thankfully, Megan & Frankie were not afraid of the cold (it never bothered them anyway! ;) ), and actually had the vast majority of their portraits taken outside! They, along with their fantastic bridal party members, were all troopers in the frigid temperatures… and I have to say, I think it was well worth it! It may have been cold, but the sun was shining and provided some gorgeous light for us to work with!

The wedding day began with getting ready photos at the Springhill Suites in the Southside, after which Megan and her bridesmaids WALKED the two blocks to the wedding venue… in the cold. One was in shorts! These ladies were committed!!!

After arriving at the Circuit Center Ballroom, Megan put on her dress, her “something borrowed” (grandma’s pearl bracelet), and her and Frankie had their first look in the courtyard of the event venue, while friends & family watched from the windows (so sweet!). We headed straight over to the Hot Metal Bridge for photos of the bride & groom afterward… and again, they walked the 3+ blocks there! Honestly, they deserve some sort of winter wedding MVP award for the amount of time they spent outside without any complaints. I was so impressed!

We headed back to the venue for bridal party & family photos, followed by a short and sweet ceremony, then a cocktail hour and reception. One of my favorite details from the wedding day was the coolest “guest book” I’ve ever seen! Guests could leave the bride & groom voicemails on an old rotary phone. I loved it, and the guests did, too! Another favorite detail was a live painting of their first dance during the reception by a local artist. It was so fun to see the painting come together throughout the evening! They also had a “to infinity & beyond” wedding cake topper, as a nod towards when they met (when they were 12!).

It was an absolute pleasure to get to come alongside Megan & Frankie as they celebrated their wedding day this weekend! They are two of the kindest, most laid back people, and their wedding day was truly so much fun to photograph!

Congratulations on your wedding day, Megan & Frankie! Thank you for the huge honor of documenting your day!

Maria & Andrew: Blue & Blush Laube Hall Wedding Photos

Maria & Andrew were my last couple to move their wedding day due to Covid. Though they had planned for a Spring celebration, their November wedding day was just as beautiful and meaningful! We started off the day with getting ready photos at the home where Maria grew up - then, we had a first look at Maria & Andrew's new home (just a few minutes down the road!), and then a ceremony & reception where two of Maria's sisters had also celebrated their wedding days!

These two made so many decisions about the details of their wedding day that centered around their love for each other and for their family... and it made their day even more of a joy to be a part of and to tell the story of!

Maria & Andrew, congratulations on your wedding day and on your marriage! We adore you two!!!

What a beautiful wedding day Allison & Anthony two had towards the end of November! These two were another couple of mine who postponed their wedding day from last year to this year - but I would say that it was well worth the wait!

Their day was filled with joy, love, and was an absolute pleasure to be a part of. We were even able to take wedding portraits at the place where they first met... at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve at Saint Vincent College!

Congratulations on your wedding day, Allison & Anthony! We are so very thankful to have been a part of your beautiful day!

Amy & Anthony: Indiana Country Club Wedding Anniversary

You might recognize these two if you’ve been following along on the blog over the last few years! ❤️I’ve had the pleasure of spending the last THREE Octobers in Indiana PA with these two - first with their engagement session back in 2019, then with their micro-wedding in 2020, and again this year for an anniversary celebration with all of their friends & family! Indiana PA is GORGEOUS in the fall!

Amy & Anthony were married last year on the coveted date of 10.10.20 surrounded by a very small group of friends & family. It was sweet, intimate, full of unexpected twists and turns (like the breakdown of the trolley that was supposed to carry all of the guests from one place to the next!).

And this year... they got to celebrate with so many more people that they hold near and dear to their hearts at Indiana Country Club! Though it was rainy day, it was still a beautiful celebration of their first year of marriage, filled with lots of little personal details! Including lots of Dunkin' donuts (their favorite dessert… and mine! ;) ), and a luggage tag favor to represent their love for travel. AND we were even able to sneak outside when the clouds parted for a few brief minutes after their ceremony!

Amy & Anthony, it was such an honor to get to celebrate with you AGAIN! When I think of or visit Indiana, PA, I will always think of you two. Congratulations on your first year of marriage!

WOW is all I can say! These two planned their "small wedding ceremony now, big reception later" before it was a "thing" . Though they've been married for two years, they finally got to celebrate with their friends & family this past weekend - on the most beautiful, first week of October weekend - at the gorgeous Bella Sera!

I had the pleasure of taking their engagement photos just a few months ago, where I was able to hear more about the story of how they met! They were complete strangers until Caitlin’s car broke down at an airport, and Tanner - the good samaritan stranger - offered to help. And after that, it’s all history!

Caitlin & Tanner, thank you so, SO much for letting me be a part of your celebration. Congratulations on two amazing years of marriage!

Pinehall at Eisler Farms was the absolute perfect setting for Nicole & Ed's gorgeous wedding day!

I had the pleasure of taking Nicole & Ed’s engagement photos in Historic Harmony back in the summer of 2020. If you’re interested in seeing them, click here!

These two are high school sweethearts who know how to throw a party! I'm not sure I've ever seen so many people stay until the very end of a wedding before. They are most certainly loved & adored by their friends & family!

Congratulations on your wedding day, Nicole & Ed! ❤️

These two had an absolutely STUNNING wedding day at one of the most beautiful venues I think I've ever photographed (and one that's been on my "wedding bucket list" for quite some time) - Fox Chapel Golf Club! Brimming with greenery, natural light, and classic details, this venue is the perfect spot for a celebration of love!

Katie, Jake, and their friends & family were so welcoming, so kind, and just an absolute pleasure to spend the day with! Congratulations again, Katie & Jake!

Leah & Matt had a wedding day filled with endless amounts of love, joy, and just the sweetest people!

It is an immeasurable blessing to get to share in some of the happiest days of people's lives, especially when I've had the privilege of working with them on quite a few occasions.

Leah & Matt had a vintage inspired wedding day that begin at Memorial Park Church in Allison Park, PA. We had a bit of fun with a fake first look, featuring Matt’s brother in a wedding dress from Goodwill - then, Matt saw his bride for the first time (for real this time!) when she walked down the aisle.

After the ceremony, we hopped over to Duquesne University for some photos, and then for a gorgeous reception the Duquesne Power Center!

Leah & Matt, you were an absolutely joy to photograph, and we pray all the best for you in your marriage! Congratulations, again!!
