Part 1: Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer {Answered}

Wedding photography is an extremely personal endeavor from start to finish. There are few other wedding vendors who spend the entire length of a wedding day with a couple from makeup and hair to the grand exit, which is why it's so important to really know who you're hiring - to know the why behind what they do!

Often, when I have an initial meeting with a bride, we begin by talking about the relationship - how the couple met, how they got engaged, what they've planned so far for their wedding day, etc., and then jump straight into packages and looking at photo albums. Every so often, I'll find an extremely prepared bride with a list of questions from "The Knot," titled "Questions to Ask Photographers Before You Book." Let me be honest for a moment - I LOVE these brides... seriously. Staying prepared and organized with a list of questions is the best way make sure I don't miss any important information that should be shared about photographing your wedding day, and it lets brides get a good feel for all facets of what I have to offer.

However -

While many of these questions cover important logistics, such as shooting on film vs. digital and what's included in my packages, none of the questions seem to take things a step further. None of them seem to probe for things that are just as important - like how I help my couples feel relaxed in front of my camera, or even why I do what I do. None probe for a why. And though, if you're meeting with me, I'll be sure to tell you my why, it's so important to ask your other vendors their why, too. And why is that? Because you want someone who cares about your wedding day. (Well, maybe I can't speak for everyone. But I know I wanted people surrounding me on my wedding day who truly cared for Nick and I! Not just people who were showing up to perform a job and leave.)

I recently came across an article titled "Ten REAL Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer: Written by a Real Wedding Photographer," written by Kay from Kay English Photography. I love the idea of answering these questions so much for my brides that over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to release a weekly blog post answering a few of these questions, plus a few of my own, and a few from "The Knot" article! (Just to keep things interesting ;) ). My heart through this segment is to give my current brides (and future brides) the ability to get to know me, my services, and my heart behind what I do a little better! So without further ado - here is the first question and answer!

1: What is your heart behind wedding photography? Why do you photograph weddings?

[Question by Jenna]

Firstly, I am a huge believer in marriage. There is something so precious about a commitment between two people to spend the rest of their lives together, learning how to better love each other every step of the way. I honestly hadn’t realized my true heart behind it until I married my best friend back in August of 2015. I know it sounds cliché, but when we received our images back from our engagement photographer, and later from our wedding photographer, I realized what I was really providing for my clients: I was providing reminders of our commitment, encouragement for the not-so-easy days, and mementos of the love we share – and those three things are truly priceless.

Secondly, I love the opportunity I have to serve and encourage my brides throughout the wedding process and throughout the wedding day. I LOVE the opportunity I have to love the crap out of my couples and to find ways to make their experience (and their day) extra special.

Lastly, I love capturing the story of the relationship and of the day. While every wedding has the same general framework and timeline, each is so unique in its own way, and I love the challenge and excitement of figuring out the best possible way to showcase a couple’s day through the photographs.

Stay tuned for more answered questions next week! If you'd like to submit a question to have answered, feel free to leave it in the comments below!

It's a beautiful thing, to meet people who radiate love and joy from every piece of their being. Trina and Jeff are not just people, but a couple that people are drawn to because of their selfless qualities. We were so honored to be a part of their wedding day and to get to know their family and friends who shared their joy so fully with them.

Trina and Jeff incorporated so many beautiful details into their wedding. Trina's favorite color - yellow - was incorporated into her invitations (and into her wedding ring with a yellow stone). She also opted for a brooch bridal bouquet, made from brooches collected throughout the years, as well as those collected from her bridal shower. It was gorgeous, and she got quite the workout holding it all day - it was so heavy, but so beautiful! In addition to her own brooch bouquet, Trina spent time finding brooches for each member of her wedding party, parents, and pastor that were personal to them - what an incredibly thoughtful way to honor them! Other fun details included a pie bar at the reception in lieu of cake, and an exit with a firetruck (Jeff is a firefighter)!

Praising God for these two and their commitment to serve God together!

There are SO many things I love about this gorgeous Roselea Farm fall wedding. First off, Kristin and Tom were amazing to work with! Their love for each other dominated every part of their day. The venue, Roselea Farm, was outstanding! The Farm has so many beautiful details and little spaces bursting with light and color. And the catering was out of this world! Fabled Table makes some of the best food I've ever experienced as a wedding vendor. The whole day, from beginning to end, was an absolute joy to be a part of! Congratulations on your marriage, Kristin and Tom!

There are hardly any words to describe the sweet love between Joie and John. Their joy was so evident throughout their wedding day, spoken through heartfelt vows to one another (which, of course, left me crying in the back row!). Their love for each other is so genuine and so authentic - all you have to do is look at these photos to know so! We couldn't be more thankful for these two and how they've become not just clients, but friends. So excited to see where marriage takes you guys!

I love how life comes full circle. Starting at the end of high school and all through college, I worked in the banquets department of the Pittsburgh Marriott North - where Sandy and Tom had their wedding reception! It was fun to photograph a space I know so well and have seen photographed before by so many others.

We started off Sandy and Tom's wedding day at their home in Cranberry Township photographing her gorgeous bridal details! After, we headed over to one of my favorite ceremony locations, Calvary United Methodist Church, for a gorgeous ceremony, and later to the Pittsburgh Marriott North for the reception. Congratulations on your marriage, Sandy and Tom!

There's something so personal about photographing a wedding in someone's own home. Kate & Christian's wedding took place in Kate's parents' backyard garage (this is no ordinary garage, I promise!) in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. This honestly might be one of the sweetest, most genuine and loving groups of people we've been privileged to work with! The couple, parents, and bridal party went out of their way to make sure we, the photographers, were taken care of - which meant so much, considering we were just vendors documenting the day!

We started off at Kate's childhood home, photographing all of the gorgeous bridal details, incorporating in an antique family heirloom silver serving tray. While the ladies were putting on their final touches, Brianna (Matron of Honor) and Kate shared a special moment together - Brianna, who was a few months pregnant at the time, gave Kate a colored garter to reveal the gender of Brianna's baby. And as you'll see from the photos, it's a boy! Such an exciting (and precious) moment to witness!

After Kate was in her dress, she shared a first look with her father - the first man in her life. It was an emotional moment - there wasn't a dry eye in the room (including mine!). We spent some time taking photos of the ladies and then headed over to the church to snap some photos of the groom and his groomsmen. After  the ceremony, we traveled back to Kate's childhood home for some bride and groom portraits and then on to the multi-car "garage" in the back for the reception (which seemed like it was almost built for their wedding day), where Kate and Christian danced the night away!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for having us as a part of your day, Kate and Christian!

Becca and Dave have been together for years, and finally tied the knot at the beginning of August! You might remember their engagement session from last fall (link here) at Northmoreland Park. Their love for each other made my job insanely easy!

We started off the day at Becca's childhood home in Lower Burrell, where Becca and Dave exchanged letters written to each other. From there, we traveled to St. Margaret Mary Church, and then onto Riverside Landings Banquet Hall to celebrate! We were even able to sneak these two out during the reception for an epic night smoke shot! Congratulations to you both on your new adventure, Becca and Dave!

We had so much fun during this session! No session that starts with ice cream could ever not be fun. We made our way from a little ice cream shop over to Point State Park, with a couple of stops in between. Near the end of the session, Kate & Todd even popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate (the reaction photo is priceless!). Also - it's definitely worth mentioning that Kate's ring is killer (see photo below)! It looks like something out of "The Great Gatsby" - so classy! Congratulations on your engagement, Kate & Todd! We wish all of the best for you two!

What is more summery than a gorgeous, outdoor wedding in July?! Elaina and Chris tied the knot mid-July surrounded by their closest friends and family, with many different states and countries represented on their guest list! While getting to know them throughout the pre-wedding photo prep and the wedding day itself, it was easy to see why so many friends had joined them to celebrate. Their love really is something special, as well as the genuine way in which they care for those around them!

Thanks for having us as a part of your day, Elaina and Chris - we wish you two all of the best in your new adventure together!

One Thing More Important Than Your Wedding Day (And Why I Love Weddings)

Every girl dreams of her wedding day. Disney movies, romantic comedies, and Nicholas Sparks novels set expectations in our minds for what a path to marriage (and even what a wedding day) should look like. But you know what’s so much more important than a wedding day? A marriage.

2018-10-08_0021.jpg

I used to love weddings. Well, I still love weddings. But now, as someone who’s married, I love weddings for a different reason. I used to love weddings for superficial reasons – for the details, the flowers, the centerpieces, the wedding dress, the venue, and even for the photo locations (don’t get me wrong, I still love all of those things, too!).

But now, when I start talking with a bride about her wedding day, instead of immediately asking for the details – I ask about the couple. I want to know the story that led to that monumental moment where the two will make a commitment to trust, love, respect, and honor each other for all the days of their lives. I want to hear what they love to do together, how they met, what he loves most about her, and so on. I want to celebrate them, because, let’s face it – getting to that point can be difficult. Choosing to love someone can be challenging sometimes – because really, after you get married, you realize that loving your spouse is a choice.

I’ve only been married for close to a year now, and don’t get me wrong – I absolutely LOVE my crazy extroverted redheaded husband – he’s my best friend and the love of my life! But sometimes, loving him day-to-day isn’t easy, especially when I let my own selfish desires overshadow what’s best for us as a couple again and again. I would’ve never been able to realize this if we hadn’t had so many wonderful married people pouring into and investing in our relationship. “We all need someone who inspires us to do better than we know how.” (Anonymous). And how much more important is it to have people in your life who can lead you in the right direction in a relationship that (should, God-willing) span the entirety of your life!

Pittsburgh-Wedding-Photographer-Hartwood-Acres-Engagement-Photos_0367.jpg

So really, when it comes down to it, my love for weddings is a bi-product of my love (and passion) for marriage. There’s so much more to a wedding day than the wedding itself. Whatever I can do to uplift, encourage, and serve people on the journey towards marriage is EXACTLY what I want to be doing. Because marriage rocks.
